Lancelot, I just watched the video and was thinking the exact same thing you said. Colt's aggressive which is a good thing. His "crap" is effective, which is a good thing i suppose. But it's dirty, blatantly dirty, and dangerous. I love wathcing Colt wrestle, and tend to root for him, but wow, I'm having second thoughts now. A wrestler of his high caliber certainly knows which way to bend a knee to injure it, certainly knows which way the spine is meant to bend, and certainly knows that it's dangerous when the elbow slips out of an armbar into a chicken wing position. I think I saw a small shove out of bounds early on too The worst part is, he could win without all that crap. He is a just a kid, but this has been going on for too long. I can't believe that Hughes hasn't knocked all that out of him by now? Maybe Eric Hess can teach Colt something about sportsmanship. I love you're skills Colt, but cut the crap!

Do you think the Ref did a bad job officiating the match?

As long as the officials do their job this postseason, it shouldn't be an issue.
You are absolutely right, he doesn't need to do that kind of stuff to win, he has more than enough ability to do it clean.

I just watched the match.
I don't know....
If I was the opposing coach or wrestler, there'd be a lot I'd be ticked about...but I don't really know if I saw anything that was outright illegal.
I'll leave it at this...Cotten is definitely a very "physical" and intimidating wrestler.

This discussion reminds me a lot of things that used to be said of Ty Moore, the four-timer from North Allegheny. He was an absolutely brilliant wrestler....but he also developed an absolutely brilliant choke from the front headlock --- and he used it blatantly. Watch this youtube highlight video very closely around the 1:32-1:50 mark. How this was not called by the ref, I don't know: www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zoi9WfWtfwAlso, here's a link to a newspaper article from the times: news.google.com/newspapers?id=B-8NAAAAIBAJ&sjid=Y24DAAAAIBAJ&pg=4507,434868&dq=ty-moore+illegal&hl=en

I agree with martymoose, I didn't see anything really illegal. He was just very physical. I have seen him do alot more questionable things in the past.

I think the referee did a good job. Colt certainly waits for the ref's whistle, and usually a split second longer before releasing a potentially dangerous hold though. Agressive? yes. And I support that. Blatantly illegal? NO, but he's flirting with it, and I think he knows it. He's a beast, so he doesn't have to constantly push the limtis of what is acceptable and safe. I'm actually a litle torn between liking to watch him wrestle and being slightly disgusted by his tactics. One could argue that his methods are effective, much like Ty Moore, but I don't want to see a another wrestler have his knee torn up, that's all. I'll be rooting for Colt to make a deep (and clean) run in the post season. Good luck Colt, but keep it clean.

I thought the referee did a good job, he was on top of everything, and gave an occasional talk as the kids would walk back to center mat. In wrestling, things can happen quickly, and not intentionally. I saw major aggression, but nothing illegal. I believe this ref would have awarded points if he thought a move illegal. I've seen a lot of things this year I don't care for. One, is the head slapping - I'm not talking about pushing the head with your hand, or trying to put your hand around an opponents neck, I'm talking head slapping like defensive football linemen use. Another thing I've noticed a lot is the unnecessary push after being out of bounds. I've seen most teams have a few kids that do this. I think its unsportsman like. When you are both out of bounds, there is no need to push. I'm sure they feel they are intimidating their opponent, but I think when it happens outside the circle, it is unsportsman like conduct. Lastly, is the head butt, which usually causes welts on the forehead and nose bleeds. I have watched some kids actually use their head as a weapon, so to speak. Getting back to the thread, I think Cotten is in that grey area, and needs to be very careful in post season, especially at states. I doubt they'll put up with too much there.

Too many elite wrestlers at the college level are doing the shove out of bounds thing.
I think high school wrestlers are seeing it there, and are emulating what they see.
In my mind, it's blatantly unsportsmanlike, and wrestlers should be penalized for it.

I think some of it is frustration, kids seem to use the edge alot and i would like to see more fleeing the mat calls. Just an idea that may help stop the shoving from happening.

I just watched the video and I got a few things things out of it. 1. cotten is very tough on top. 2. he is very physical and while D"urso got may have got hurt thats kind of the nature of the sport. I didn't see anything that screamed to me thats he's trying hurt the kid. you don't see him jerking any limbs or anything like that. he's physical and wrestles to the whistle. now with that said if they wrestle again I do believe it will be a much different match.
