Get more kids out for wrestling, and keep them on the team. That's the solution. How? I agree that there are like 50 reasons why numbers are getting lower. One reason is coaching. There are less coaches as well.

Coaches need to understand that every kid is different. Not all kids strive to be a Zain Retherford, and that's ok. Some kids just want to be on a team and have a good experience. Over zealous coaches who demand certain things in practice every single day do not help the average wrestler. "Average" wrestlers are the lifeline of any team, as no team will have state quality up and down, and it should not be expected! Let some of these kids have some fun....this isn't the military.

ALL kids put their name on that sign up list for one reason. Interest. Something along the way changes that interest

NO KIDDING A freshman at 145 who is 1-15 with 14 pins against him will take greatly to that statement!

tespbor119 You are special. You sound like a snowflake! I can tell you’ve never been a good coach. The thing that drives wrestlers away is the hard work that a good coach demands in order to become a successful wrestler. Success in this sport isn’t measured by championships alone but the achievements a kid has throughout life because he learned to not give up is a measurable success.

As I said in another thread, Athens has a pretty good 106lber sitting home this weekend. Wrestled all year for them and got bumped out for post season. If you want to see full brackets then let these kids wrestle. So Athens has two kids in a weight class, so what, at least they get to roll. I think that is where wrestling is dropping the ball. We need to give them more opportunities, not less. Maybe even let him wrestle for another team that doesn't have a 106lber.

I’ve said that at the beginning. If we drop 1-2 weight classes, allow for extras to be entered in postseason but the extra has to have a certain amount of minimum matches.

He is 20-9 on the season, would that make the cut? 15-9 if you take out forfeits.

I don’t like more than one from one team in post season. I’m ok with it in Regular season tournaments.
The wrestler you’re talking about was borderline rankable all year so not exactly the poster child for major changes. Yes it is unfortunate for that kid but happens every year. Our team has had good kids bumped out last couple years or guys wrestling out of weight to make the post season lineup.

I guess its a matter of opinion, if forfeits dont bother you, leave it the way it is or if more then 2 to 3 ffts in a match bother you , lets change it There are still going to be forfeits! Coaches will forfeit to studs to give there guys better matches that is not going to change! Do you people think this is going to make your teams more competitive on the big stage? Wouldn't you want a potential max of 14 matches instead of 12? I and others have said this before....if the argument is 2 to 3 forfeits a match, that is still about the same amount of wrestling if we keep the weights the same. I feel some of you people think you can finally have a full line up or something? What about the rest of the state? Less wrestling is not the answer. I guess we will see what happens, I for one (as you all probably know) strongly oppose making coaches and fans happier at the expense of student athletes.

I promise you however, I am the farthest thing from a snowflake.

I promise you however, I am the farthest thing from a snowflake. We are on the same page about eliminating weight classes. I am not a fan of it. Especially if you look at all the talent up and down the weight classes in district 4. Studs everywhere. I was offended by you calling out coaches that demand putting 110% effort towards practicing. Which is the way I interpreted your post. I have coached for lots years at the elementary level and the varsity level and I don’t think it’s the coaches that are driving away the wrestlers. It’s the “snowflake” society that we are in right now that is keeping the kids away. I’m convinced that the parents are to blame. Sorry if I hurt your feelings! And yes I did see the post about your credentials. Keep up the great work. FF’s don’t bother me because from a team perspective it’s out of the coaches control but from the individual perspective I will always strive to make every kid a champion with a great work ethic.
