They were there sitting in the bleachers. Head coach said he promised the backups if they stayed and trained during the individual postseason he would let them wrestle the first round of the team tournament.

Notre Dame uses PIAA quarterfinal loss to get experience for younger wrestlers.
Notre Dame finishes the season with a dual meet record of 5-1.
“We had five matches throughout the year in the regular season. Varsity guys saw a lot of time, they had a great individual state tournament, won a team title out at Hershey,” Notre Dame coach Matt Veres said. “We used this as more development for younger guys. Some of these guys saw no matches all year and we kind of put a team emphasis on, when the year was done, we wanted to get every guy at least one varsity match.”
The Tigers, who finished fourth at last weekend’s individual tournament with four place-winners, won 10 bouts and earned 23 bonus points against a young Crusaders lineup.
The Crusaders didn’t have senior Brett Ungar (PIAA champion at 120 pounds), junior Brandon Chletsos (runner-up at 132) or sophomore Holden Garcia (fifth at 160).
“The way we look at our season, at least for the past several years, our mountain top is the individual state tournament. That’s what we train towards, what we develop towards and our goals are set to put as many guys on the podium as we can and, of course, to win a team title,” Veres said. “Obviously, we’d never do this if it was before the individuals. It was just a mindset for these kids to come in here and compete. They’re excited, I’m glad they got mat time because they saw nothing all year. They busted their tail in the room and they saw no mat time.”

Thank you for the info. A impressive way of doing it and giving everyone something to work towards.

That and you can’t get upset if you don’t put your best team out there and try to win. But if it was either not enter or do this I’m glad they at least participated. I give credit to SCA kids for staying at weight and putting their best team out there.
