HAMPTON, Va. - The Bucknell wrestling team closed out its trip to the Virginia Duals with a narrow 20-16 loss to 25th-ranked Old Dominion on Saturday. Austin Miller provided the highlight of the day with a dramatic win by fall in the second overtime period against 10th-ranked Jerome Robinson at 125 pounds. Heavyweight Joe Stolfi completed a perfect 3-0 tournament, and Paul Petrov and ninth-ranked Corey Lear also picked up wins for the Bison, who now have six of their next seven duals at home.
Miller got the Bison off to a great start with his second win by fall of the season and his second career victory over a ranked opponent. The 125-pound match was all square at 1-1 after three periods, and neither wrestler scored in the first overtime period. In the second OT stanza Robinson, who came in with a 13-2 record, started in the down position, and 28 seconds into the period Miller pinned him.
Petrov followed with an 11-3 major decision over Scott Festejo, who was ranked 19th this week at 133 pounds by Wrestling Insider News. Petrov recorded three takedowns and got three back points in the final period to secure his third major decision of the season and give the Bison a quick 10-0 lead.
Old Dominion won the next three bouts to pull even at 10-10, but then Lear used a third-period escape to pull out a 1-0 victory over Brett Miller at 165. Lear, back on the mat after missing a few matches due to injury, improved to 17-3 on the season.
A major decision at 174 and Austin Coban's close 3-1 decision over Robert Marchese at 184 put the Monarchs ahead 17-13 with two bouts to go. At 197, Bucknell sophomore Tyler Lyster, who recorded a clutch technical fall in Friday's 20-16 win over Buffalo, got locked up in a tight back-and-forth tilt with Jacob Henderson, who entered the weekend with a 12-1 record.
Scoreless entering the second period, Lyster got on the board with an escape, but then Henderson came back with a takedown. Lyster later escaped again and the match was tied at 2-2 after seven minutes, but Henderson had the riding-time point that gave him the 3-2 win and clinched the victory for the Monarchs.
Stolfi ended the tournament on a positive note for the Bison with a 6-5 win over 17-9 Matt Tourdot in the heavyweight match. A day earlier Stolfi recorded a pin against 19th-ranked Virginia and secured the decisive 2-1 decision in the win over Buffalo. On Saturday Stolfi and Tourdot alternated takedowns and were knotted up at 4-4 in the third period. Stolfi's third takedown of the bout snapped a 4-4 tie with 45 seconds to go. Tourdot tacked on the riding point, but it wasn't enough.
Bucknell has its first EIWA dual of the season next Friday when Columbia visits Davis Gym at 7 p.m. Army will then be in town on Saturday at 4 p.m. Both contests will air live on Bison Vision.
